Are you breaking the law? Or is the speed limit illegal?

A DetNews article today says Metro-Detroit motorists caught speeding may not be breaking the law, because in many cases the speed limits themselves are illegal!

Four years after the passage of Public Act 85, which requires municipalities in Michigan to conduct proper speed limit studies, most cities and townships have not complied.

One likely reason for this is communities want speeding ticket revenue and by keeping limits low they can write out alot more tickets.

Some suspect roads mentioned in the article include Woodward Avenue near 9 mile, Rochester Rd near Maple, and Eureka road.

Steve Purdy , Director of the National Motorists Association Michigan Chapter, said prosecturs will usually dismiss tickets challenged under PA 85 to avoid setting precedent.
